The top of the Google SERP page is a highly-coveted space that many small businesses and solopreneurs can only dream of achieving one day.

Going against bigger companies who have been in the industry for years – it might be hard to believe that it is still possible to gain traction and traffic to your website organically through SEO.

SEO is the tried-and-true, OG method that will help you to build authority and trust with users – and rising the ranks of Google.

#1: Conduct your keyword research.

Before starting on anything else, it is key that you conduct your keyword research.

This will help you to identify the main keywords and phrases that will be used throughout your website, whether it be the landing page, product descriptions, or blog articles.

The first step to doing this is knowing who your target audience is. By familiarising yourself with the type of questions they have, their needs, interests and hobbies – you are one step closer to finding out the language that they use to search on Google.

Tip: never use single words as your keywords. These tend to be more competitive especially in saturated markets – go for phrases containing 4 words or more instead. It might take you awhile to find the right set of keywords, but once you find about 2 main keywords and 3 additional ones, you will want to move on to the next step:

#2: Infuse keywords into ALL your written content.

That includes everything that is part of your site architecture, from the descriptions of your images to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section on your website.

Consider using natural language and focus on flow when crafting your content – you do not want to come across as robotic or  spammy by Google. Remember that your content is supposed to add value; not confuse or annoy users.

While you might be tempted to stuff as many keywords as possible into every piece of content, this can easily backfire if you aren’t careful. Once again, create your content with a user-first approach to pull this one off right.

#3: Create original content and distribute it EVERYWHERE.

The aim here is to go for both QUALITY and QUANTITY.

Because you are still a relatively new site that is trying to gain traffic and brand awareness,  you will want to focus on consistently churning out high-quality content – essentially telling Google that you are a reliable site offering real value to users.

Make sure that your content is made for a mobile-first generation – with proper headings, subheadings and bullet points to break up your content in a seamless manner that is easy to digest and understand.

To accompany your written content, you should also be utilising any interesting images, videos and other media that you have on hand. Don’t just stop there – make sure to distribute your content as much as possible, incorporating them as part of a bigger social media marketing strategy, or reposting them on other authoritative blogs in your industry to gain backlinks.

Tip: SEO is NEVER a one-time deal – you will have to constantly track your results and make weekly adjustments in order to get the best results. Both Google Analytics and Google Search Console are easy-to-use tools that you should be using to track your most important metrics.
